DC Power systems have traditionally been the domain of telecommunication carriers, with large central battery arrays charged by rectifiers. The simplest of power systems typically consisting of battery, bus/distribution and load, they offer the maximum in autonomy in the event of power failure. Unlike typical UPS systems where batteries are available to support critical load for between 5 and 15 minutes, many 48 v DC systems offer autonomy in excess of 4 hours.
The sizing of DC systems needs to take into account many considerations including charger size, battery size, and current requirements within voltage specific voltage limits. While autonomy is the primary consideration, recharge time after discharge must also be taken into account within the overall system design.
Cabling can often be overlooked in the design of DC power systems, and unlike AC systems where cables are sized to support current rating/voltage, one of the prime consideration of a DC system is the ohmic loss of cabling runs to ensure that voltage drop does not exceed equipment specifications.
We can support full distribution designs, power loss budgets, conductor sizing and system specifications offering a range of rectifier products, batteries and distributions systems to meet your requirements.
In addition to the traditional installation services we can offer a full range of maintenance services including discharge testing, impedance testing, trending analysis and battery replacement.
Internet telephony is another factor for future DC systems, with VOIP telephony services needing to offer reliability equal to that of the traditional circuit switched battery backed networks. Providing DC power for network switches will be a future challenge for both traditional Telco’s and IT managers alike with batteries and rectifier systems becoming common place within network racks in office environments. Installation safety standards, along with low maintenance batteries are key to the solutions we can offer.
