Battery Backup

Modular Network Solutions has been installing, maintaining and replacing batteries ranging from single 12v 7AH monoblocs in small UPS units through to 160AH monoblocs weighing over 100kg within 5000 amp DC systems containing 100’s of batteries.

UPS and DC power systems used in the support of data centres and server rooms are reliant on reliable battery systems in order to maintain autonomy in the event of power failure. Typically these systems have a design life of 10 years but depending on the environment and quality of manufacturer the actual life can vary. The life of the battery is determined by the rate of internal corrosion which occurs naturally in the battery and this variable factor will determine the life of your system.

Battery Testing

To ensure reliable operation we recommend an annual battery test to ensure the battery will still perform in line with expectation and individual faulty cells are identified and replaced. Battery tests can be carried out on-line utilising cellcorder instrumentation. This provides a snapshot at a point in time by measuring the internal resistance of your battery and the voltage. Any out of tolerance cells are identified along with corrective actions required to protect your system.

The consequences of battery failure and associated shutdown of UPS systems to support critical loads can be significant for almost any organisation, so an annual test of battery systems represents a good investment with justifiable returns.

The next level to ensure battery availability is continuous battery monitoring. Without this monitoring the true integrity and capacity of your battery system is unknown. Continuous monitoring can provide a true picture of the reliability of your battery system and can provide the predicted life of your battery system in order to forecast replacement of individual or entire battery systems. Battery monitoring systems measure current, voltage, temperature and changes during any discharge/charge cycles and can help pinpoint deterioration of individual cells prior to a failure.

When the time comes for battery replacement we are able to offer a turnkey solution in order to source new batteries at competitive rates, on-site installation of new batteries and certified disposal of old batteries through the UK’s leading waste battery collection and recycling specialist.
